SUMMARY:Vail Valley Band with Cowboy Poet Jake Riley
DESCRIPTION:The renowned Vail Valley Band will be the featured act at Leadville’s famed Tabor Opera House on September 2\, 2023\, at 7:00 pm. Don Watson\, Beth Swearingen\, and Peter Fontanese are a talented team of creative musicians who have been performing together since 1995. They have performed all over the nation as well as the world.  \n\n\n\nThe band members pride themselves on their technical abilities\, musical versatility\, and their uncanny knack of matching their song choices to their audiences\, from Country\, Classic Rock\, Pop\, Jazz\, Folk\, show tunes\, and even classical. \n\n\n\nJake grew up as a cowboy kid\, right here in the Upper Arkansas Valley. He first encountered the art of cowboy poetry by attending Michael Martin Murphy’s WestFest in Copper Mountain with his dad. It was there that he witnessed the art of performed poetry by Baxter Black and Waddie Mitchell and fell in love with the medium. He had always loved a good rhyme and began writing some on his own. Jake has performed his work in 11 states\, including three times at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko\, Nevada. Jake’s work is probably best described as “cowboy contemporary\,” but collides with the non-western realm as often as not. Jake has come to love the performance aspect of the spoken word and sharing a good story with his audience. His work is often humorous\, sometimes thought-provoking\, and always from the heart.

SUMMARY:Musical: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
DESCRIPTION:Music & Lyrics by WILLIAM FINN\n\n\n\nBook by RACHEL SHEINKIN\n\n\n\nConceived by REBECCA FELDMAN\n\n\n\n\nJoin an all-local cast as they return to their roots as high school spellers! \n\n\n\nWinner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book\, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced\, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn\, this bee is one unforgettable experience. \n\n\n\nAn eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives\, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words\, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing\, pout-inducing\, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. \n\n\n\nArtistic and Stage Director Scott Carroll says\, “I have wanted to bring this fun\, witty\, and charming musical to Leadville for years! We are so excited to have an all-local cast bringing this story to life. It is always fun\, well we hope it is\, for adults to revisit their school experiences and bring to life these fun characters. Don’t miss the opportunity to see your neighbors and friends onstage and off! Who knows\, as an audience member\, you might get a chance to show off your spelling skills too!” \n\n\n\nTHE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is presented through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com \n\n\n\n*Adult audiance suggested\, PG-13 rated content
